CAMS Update: 2016 Helmet Rules and Frontal Head Restraints for Groups M, O, P, Q, R, F and V

Frontal Head Restraints

We’re set to take to the track for our first historic race meeting of 2016 in just over two weeks, which makes this a timely moment to remind competitors that new CAMS rules regarding Frontal Head Restraints are now in place for Groups M, O, P, Q, R, F and V ( as of January 1, 2016).

Firstly, please note that CAMS rules are continually updated and refined. Please refer to the up-to-date information on CAMS’ official website when making decisions. The 2016 CAMS manual is available on their website here.

These rule changes refer to the bulletin released on the 16th of July, 2014, which introduced the mandatory use of Frontal Head Restraints. This took effect for Groups M, O, P, Q, R, F and V on January the 1st, 2016. A technical bulletin on the change can be downloaded from the CAMS website here.

Long-time HSRCA supporter Greg Yard of Simpson Safety Equipment Australia is offering HSRCA members and associates a free set of FIA Post Anchors with every Simpson Hybrid FIA unit sold, and is including free fitting and set up at the track.

The 2016 CAMS manual also introduced changes to rules around helmet specifications. These include:

  • The deletion of the Snell SA2000 from ‘Level B’ classification, meaning that anyone with a helmet of this certification will need to upgrade.
  • The addition of the FIA 8859-2015 standard

Finally, CAMS have made some clarification to the standards for rain lights on 1st Category Race Cars. These can be read in their technical bulletin here.

Please ensure that your equipment is up-to-date, well-maintained, safe and ready to go racing this year. We’re looking forward to seeing you all at the track.

The up-to-date 2016 CAMS manual is available on their website here.
