Bob Britton, ‘Mr. Rennmax’, Talk at May Social Lunch
May 14, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
To satisfy an increasing demand by club members, Bob Britton, AKA ‘Mr.Rennmax’, has agreed to give a talk on Tuesday, the 14th of May 2019 at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club in West Ryde.
Bob’s talk will be aided by a photographic display of his products courtesy of Dave Williamson. Some verbal prompting will come from Rennmax registrar Kerry Smith at Bob’s request.
We will learn the background to race car building and the incredible drive and expertise needed and developed to produce near to 100 Rennmax vehicles, many of which were incredibly successful against the best of the overseas factory race cars both then and now.
Surprisingly, Bob’s first race car was the F1 Rennmax Climax of Ossie & Noel Hall, sawmillers from Woolgoolga NSW. This quickly led to Formula Juniors, Formula Vees, F3s, F2s and a wide range of very successful sports racing cars – each one has a story. Some very clever and interesting non-race cars were also produced at the same time as he was carrying out wheel manufacture, machining, engineering, chassis repairs and replacements, as if he wasn’t busy enough at the time.
An early high point was accompanying Frank Matich to the USA for his Can Am challenge in 1967 with the SR3 sports car.
In March 2019, Bob has again been publicly recognised for his service to motor racing in Australia by CAMS in being awarded the most recent Phil Irving award in Melbourne.
In the meantime, Bob beavers away in his workshop in Annangrove building what he calls his art sculptures in metal for his unique, fascinating and growing ‘museum’ of Bob’s Rennmaxes.
Join us in the Willandra Room of the Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club at 117 Ryedale Road, West Ryde at 11AM for a 11:30AM start. There’s a choice of three dining options there so stay over for lunch with your friends.
